Making the Vent Work for the Patient (Walking Home from the ICU podcast)

I recently joined Kali Dayton on her podcast, “Walking Home from the ICU“. She shares experiences of patients and caregivers on how to optimally care for critically ill patients to maximize physical and mental functioning. This usually involves minimizing use of sedatives and paralytics, and the “normal” in her home base ICU is truly remarkable. (Would you ever have a patient wide awake on 100% oxygen and 14 of PEEP? They make it work!)

In episode 84, “Zentensive Care“, I joined her to discuss strategies to make the ventilator work for the patient, paying close attention to the goals of mechanical ventilation. Many times, this involves not trying to fit the patient to the ventilator (rather the opposite).
